In grade 11 at the Bellville High School Johann started with voice training with Theresa Loock, at that time Crous, and the following year Retha Herbst took over the voice training duties and Johann took part in the Tygerberg Eistedfodd and receive highest distinction for both categories he took part in. He also received the bursary for his age group.
After school he continued voice training with Margaretha Deysel at the Conservatory at the University of Stellenbosch and in 1977 he again got highest distinction and distinction for the categories he took part in at the Stellenbosch Eisteddfod. During this time he kept singing at various occasions and because of his love for sacred music he enjoyed singing at church services and spiritual meetings.
In 1980 Johann became private secretary to prof Ernst Marais at the President’s Council and his life took a different direction because of his full time occupation. He keep singing on a part-time basis and Esther Marais, prof Marais's wife, also used him as a soloist when she was preaching. In 1983 Johann became private secretary to the minister of Health and because of this busy programme his singing career was totally pushed to the background.
In 1981 the wife of prof Ernst Marais (Chairman of the Science Committee of the President’s Council), organized a birthday party for him in the beautiful dining room of the Council. The Vice State President, Alwyn Schlebusch, also attended the function. I sang Malotte’s “The Lord’s Prayer”, accompanied by Andries Engelbrecht (piano).
During 1983, while Johann was in Pretoria, he became a member of the Elkana Choir and during October and November he was the bass soloist in a Christmas cantate that they performed at different churches.
He was also invited to perform at a feminar, a women's meeting. Johann accompanied by Rickus Burger, sang the "Holy City". He also gave solo performances at different churches and sang at a few weddings when he was based in Pretoria.
In the second semester of 1984 the Elkana Choir joined forces with two other choirs and they presented another Christmas Cantate, Vreugde op Aarde. Johann was the bass soloist in this production which was presented at several other congregations. Prof Anna Neethling-Pohl was the compere in this production. On Christmas day of that year Johann sang D'Adam's Met Middernag in the DR Church in Bredasdorp and was accompanied by Awie van Wyk from Potchefstroom.
In November 1984 Johann performed at the Christmas Service of the DR Church Schweizer-Reneke in North West and after that service he sang at the Schweizer- Reneke Anglican Church.
In 1988 he again took up voice training with Margaretha Deysel in Cape Town and on a small scale he started performing again. The workload of his full time career gradually pushed his singing career to the background again. During this time Johann was asked by the SA Air force to be part of a concert in Pretoria. Margaretha and Johann travelled to Pretoria by SAAF vlossie (Dakota) and had a wonderful time in Pretoria. The audience enjoyed Ona Ackermann an Johann's duet from Mozart's Magic Flute, Bei Mannern, thoroughly.
Although Johann was in a full time job, he never stop singing. He was always singing at weddings, at church services and at women's meetings. Johann loved classical sacred songs, and it's because of that, that he was always asked to sing at Easter and Christmas programmes in different churches.
In 1993 a group of churches in Mitchell’s Plain decided to organize a rally at the Joseph Stone Auditorium in Athlone. At the meeting I sang “The Holy City” with piano accompaniment.
In 1998 the Chief of the SA Air Force invited four musicians to sing at the opening of a renovated building in Pretoria. I sang “Ein mädchen oder weibchen” and the duet “Bei manner welche” with Ona Ackermann (soprano). I also sang Mozart’s “Litanei”. My singing lecturer at that time, Margaretha Deyzel, was also invited.
In 1997 after resigning from his full time job, he took up his singing career on a more serious basis. He met Lionel Boyd, a music teacher, and the two of them gave recitals at different occasions. During 1998 Johann went through a deep spiritual experience and he started to concentrate more on sacred singing. It was always a dream of Johann to start an official music ministry. In November 1999 his dream became reality and Qahal Productions was established. (Qahal is the Hebrew word for congregation or “chosen one”).
After nine years of full time work at Qahal Productions, Johann once again took a full time job in 2008 and became manager of Huis Mostertshoek. This time, the scope of Qahal Productions was broadened widely, as Johann incorporated Qahal Productions in his full time working environment, thus taking his ministry to all and sundry at the old age homes and retirement villages. Countless people was blessed since then through the blessed performances by the Qahal Musicians.
Currently, Johann is manager at Huis Lückhoff where his ministry has escalated to a higher level, testament to the high quality training he receives from Hana van Niekerk, music lecturer at UCT. The future promises to be a time of extreme blessed performances as Qahal plans programs for Easter and Advent as well as Johann’s first compact disk release!
